Record a customer payment
Record money received, including tax the customer withheld.
A receipt records money you collect from a customer. In Egypt many business customers deduct withholding tax before paying, so a receipt has two amounts: the cash received and the tax withheld. Together they reduce what the customer owes you. Receipts are numbered automatically in the form RC-year-number.
Steps
- Receivables (Sales) → Receipts → New Receipt.
- Select the customer, the date and the cashbox or bank account the money was received into.
- Enter the amount received. If the customer withheld tax, enter it under "Withholding by customer" so it is recorded as tax receivable.
- Click "Save & Post". The customer's balance updates; check it in Financial Statements → Customer Statement.
Good to know
- Posting writes: debit the cashbox or bank with the amount received, debit 1107 Withholding Tax Receivable with the tax withheld, and credit the customer receivable (1103) with both together.
- The amount received must be at least 0.01, and the withholding cannot be negative.
- Tax → Withholding Report lists the tax your customers withheld in a period, which helps you match it with the Form 41 your customers file.
Common questions
Can I link a receipt to a specific invoice?
No. A receipt is recorded against the customer, not a single invoice, and it reduces the customer's overall balance. Use the Customer Statement to see invoices and receipts together with the running balance.
How do I correct a posted receipt?
A posted receipt cannot be edited or deleted. Open its journal in General Ledger → Journal Entries and click "Reverse", then record the correct receipt. A draft receipt can simply be deleted and entered again.
Example: the customer paid 11,100 and withheld 300. What do I enter?
Enter 11,100 as the amount received and 300 as withholding by customer. The customer is credited with 11,400 in total, so an invoice of 11,400 is fully settled.
